Teamsters/UPS National Master Agreement 2023-2028, Article 6 Section 4: drones, driverless vehicles, platooning and shifting are excluded from ordinary technological change for the contract term; UPS must give six months' notice and bargain the effects. New work created by technology stays with bargaining-unit employees.
“such changes shall not include the use of drones or driverless vehicles to transport, deliver or pick up packages, platooning or shifting”
- Aug 1, 2023
Same agreement, Article 6 Section 6: no discipline based solely on GPS or telematics data, no inward-facing cameras or in-cab recording.
“No employee shall be disciplined based solely upon information received from GPS, telematics, or any successor system”
- Jun 9, 2023
During 2023 bargaining UPS agreed to negotiate with the union before introducing technologies such as drones and driverless vehicles, and to a ban on disciplining drivers based on technology data.
“negotiate with the Teamsters at least 45 days before it introduces certain technology such as drones, driverless vehicles”
One binding instrument protects human workers from automation at UPS: Article 6 of the Teamsters National Master Agreement (2023 to 2028) blocks unilateral use of drones, driverless vehicles and platooning and bans telematics-only discipline. That protection was won by the union in bargaining and is not a UPS-authored policy. UPS's own SEC-filed releases describe Network of the Future as efficiency through automation, report about 48,000 operational and 14,000 management positions eliminated in 2025 with up to 30,000 more targeted for 2026, and the 10-K says UPS is increasing its use of AI. No UPS statement committing to keep human workers was found. Mixed evidence.
The classification is about evidence, not values. “Supports human-first” marks a documented practice, policy or on-record statement in favour of human work; “cuts the other way” marks documented AI or automation adoption. Both are listed so the reader can weigh them.
